Learning Objectives

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The Ohio Osteopathic Foundation (OOF) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.

1. Explain the adaptations to osteopathic diagnosis in the seated patient with limited mobility.

2. Demonstrate rapid scanning and diagnosis for common upper extremity osteopathic somatic dysfunctions in the seated patient.

3. Demonstrate rapid direct and indirect treatments for common upper extremity osteopathic somatic dysfunctions with minimal change from your diagnostic position.

Shawn Kerger, DO

Dr. Shawn Kerger is a 1996 graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). He’s since earned board certification in Osteopathic Family Practice and OMM, and a CAQ in Sports Medicine after training at Sports Care with Dr. Gunnar Brolinson.

He was the Osteopathic Program Director and DME at a parallel-track FP residency at The Toledo Hospital and the Osteopathic Site Director at Sports Care, where he served as head team physician for the Toledo Slayers and the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets, and team physician for the University of Toledo Rockets, the Toledo Mud Hens, and the Toledo Storm. During this time, he also served as a co-chairman for The Toledo Hospital Ethics Committee.

Dr. Kerger was the Discipline Chair of OMM at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and an associate professor in Sports Medicine where he provided care for the Virginia Tech varsity athletes as an assistant team physician. He obtained his 3rd board certification (in Neuromuscular and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine) in 2005 and was named a Fellow in the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine in 2011. He has lectured in Germany and in France by invitation on topics pertaining to osteopathic sports medicine.

Currently, he is Clinical Professor and Department Chair of OMM at the OU-HCOM Dublin branch campus; is a past-president of the AOASM, and sees patients in a sports medicine / musculoskeletal medicine practice.
