Pediatric Food Allergies

This lecture will help physicians learn how to identify different types of adverse food reactions and recognize food allergies and how they negatively impact children. Dr. Warrier will discuss the appropriate use of testing for food allergy diagnosis and specify the best times to refer patients for specialty care.
Objectives:
- Identify different types of adverse food reactions
- Recognize the incidence of food allergy and its negative impact on children (health, social)
- Understand the appropriate use of testing for Food Allergy diagnosis
- Apply the best knowledge guidance of infant feeding
- Identify what is Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)
- Specify best times to refer the patient for specialty care

Manoj Warrier, MD
Dr. Manoj Warrier currently practices at the Allergy, Asthma & Food Allergy Centers in St. Louis, Missouri. He specializes in the treatment of children and adults with allergies, asthma, and immune deficiencies. He mainly sees patients at the South County location and the West County location. Before joining the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Care Center in 2008, he was on faculty at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Ohio.
Dr. Warrier earned his bachelor's degree from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, Kentucky. He completed a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency at St. Louis University Health Sciences Center and Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center and a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at St. Louis University.
Dr. Warrier is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, and in Allergy & Immunology by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. He has been an invited speaker for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and Continuing Medical Education meetings. He was awarded the Outstanding Junior Faculty Pediatric Abstract Award presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Allergy and Immunology at the AAAAI on two different occasions.
He has co-authored several papers on studies on food allergies. These include "The Prevalence, Severity, and Distribution of Childhood Food Allergy in the United States" published in Pediatrics in 2011 (the often quoted 1 in 13 children are affected by food allergies comes from this paper) and "Parent Report of Physician Diagnosis in Pediatric Food Allergy" published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology," in 2012. He is passionate about food allergies since his older daughter suffers from peanut, tree nut, and chickpea food allergies.
Dr. Warrier is actively involved in the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at SSM St. Mary's Health Center, Mercy Hospital Residency Program, and the Allergy-Immunology Fellowship Program at St. Louis University. Dr. Warrier is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at St. Louis University.
