When to Refer Your Patient for Surgery for GERD

This lecture was presented by Dr. Jennifer Taylor as part of the IOA's 44th Annual Winter Update.

Learning Objectives:

1. Differentiate the clinical indications for surgical referral versus continued medical management in patients with hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
2. Evaluate patient’s specific factors that influence the decision to pursue surgery.
3. Integrate osteopathic principles by recognizing how structural and functional relationships of the diaphragm, esophagus, and gastroesophageal junction inform clinical decision-making in
managing hiatal hernia.
