TICKED OFF: Lyme Disease Update


Following the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology and geographic distribution of Lyme disease in the United States and explain its relevance to clinical practice.
  2. Recognize the clinical stages and key signs/symptoms of Lyme disease, including early localized, early disseminated, and late disease presentations.
  3. Interpret current CDC guidelines for laboratory testing, including the two-tier serologic approach and its limitations.
  4. Differentiate Lyme disease from common mimicking conditions to reduce diagnostic errors.
  5. Apply evidence-based treatment regimens for Lyme disease across various clinical scenarios (e.g., early disease, neuroborreliosis, arthritis).
  6. Identify strategies for prevention and patient education, including tick avoidance and post-exposure prophylaxis recommendations.
  7. Discuss the controversies and evidence surrounding post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome and prolonged antibiotic use.

Dr. Ronald Januchowski, D.O.

Dr. Januchowski graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993 and did a one-year internship at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He began active duty in the Army at Fort Bragg and then completed his family medicine residency at Womack Army Medical Center. He also completed a Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Januchowski retired from active duty in 2001, having attained the rank of Colonel, and went into private practice in Gastonia, North Carolina, eventually moving to the Spartanburg, South Carolina, area to become the osteopathic family medicine residency director at the first osteopathically accredited residency site in South Carolina. He started his career at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at VCOM-Carolinas when it opened in 2011 as associate dean for curriculum, assessment and medical education. He currently serves as Dean of VCOM- VA Campus, in Blacksburg.
