Osteopathic Aerospace Medicine Update and In Flight Medical Emergencies


Originally presented at the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons (WAOPS) Spring 2025 Conference, this on-demand CME program features Kris Belland, DO as he offers expert insights into in-flight emergencies and an osteopathic aerospace update. WAOPS is proud to make this valuable educational resource available to you.

Learning Objectives: 
Following completion of this program, attendees shall be able to: 
-Describe the unique aerospace medicine environment of commercial airline flights;
-List the contents of commercial airline in flight medical kits as regulated by the US FAA;
-Explain the multiple resources that are available during an in flight emergency.

The Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons (WAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. The WAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Kris Belland

Dr. Kris M. Belland, an Osteopathic physician, is the Past President of the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine (AOCOPM) and currently the President and CEO of the Aerospace Medical Strategic Consultation, PLLC. He recently served as the FAA Southwest Regional Deputy Flight Surgeon. Prior to that he was an Aeromedical consultant to Pilot and Flight Attendant Unions, Corporate and Chief Medical Officer for American Airlines and completed a full 30+ year career in the US Navy (USN). He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and board certified in Family and Aerospace Medicine with master’s in business administration, Public Health, and Strategic Studies. During his time in the USN, he was qualified as both a flight surgeon and pilot, where he accrued 2,000 flight hours, 112 arrested landings, and 25 combat missions in aircraft like the F/A-18 Hornet, A-6 Intruder, EA-6B Prowler, and the F-14 Tomcat. During his career he was recognized with the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, US Navy Flight Surgeon of the Year, Sonny Carter Memorial Award, US Air Force Historical Foundation’s Award in Research and Writing, Aerospace Medical Association’s Lyster Award, Society of US Naval Flight Surgeons (SUSNFS) Graybiel Award, and Collins Award for outstanding publication in the field of human factors and the SUSNFS’ and the CAPT Robert E. Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical, Human Factors Associations, AOCOPM, Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA) and is a past President of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), 2015-16.
