Risk Management: Patient Communication

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit;
  • Learn the pitfalls of communication with patients and how they may prompt a lawsuit;
  • Manage your risk through efficient, effective, and open communication with your patients;
  • Learn the importance of strategy for communication after an adverse medical event.

The Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association (VOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. VOMA designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 2A CME credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

​Grievances regarding program administration and reporting of AOA CME credits will be handled on an individual basis Initially, all grievances should be directed to VOMA Executive Director. Participants with grievances that cannot be resolved will be sent to the AOA Council on CME , 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

Anthony S. Cottone, Esq.

Mr. Cottone represents healthcare clients, including healthcare providers, treatment facilities, healthcare groups and national hospital organizations in civil litigation. His main focus is on defense of medical malpractice claims, but he also has great experience defending clients in various other matters such as Board of Medicine investigations, employment discrimination claims, commercial disputes, and general liability.  He has a true passion for courtroom advocacy, which began as a criminal prosecutor.  Since then, he has dedicated his career to represent the interests of medical professionals and healthcare organizations devoted to providing an invaluable service to our communities.

He is engaged in many professional organizations, including the Professional Liability Defense Federation (PLDF), and the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys (VADA).  He has served in numerous leadership roles with the PLDF and has been an author and presenter with the organization on numerous occasions. 
Mr. Cottone is an attorney with the Byrne Legal Group in Richmond, Virginia and is here today to share his knowledge and experience with you regarding medical malpractice claims and lawsuits.
