Crying Over Spilled Milk: Basic Care of Breastfeeding Women

The  majority of women  (84.1%)  in  the  United  States  initiate  breastfeeding at birth, yet only 25.6% breastfeed exclusively to six months as recommended. Physicians of all specialties need to be educated in lactation in order to provide appropriate evidence-based care to lactating patients and support long-term breastfeeding.

Learning Objectives:

    • Identify barriers and challenges to exclusively breastfeeding and strategies to address them.
    • Support long term breastfeeding with evidence-based patient care.
    • Discuss osteopathic manipulation techniques that can assist with the care of the breastfeeding dyad.
