Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Primary Care Provider


Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate situations for use of POCUS in a family practice setting  
  • Select the appropriate ultrasound probe for the specific POCUS exam. 
  • Describe the appropriate anatomical locations and ultrasound views needed for POCUS exams. 
  • Interpret POCUS images for pathological findings. 
  • Assess quality of POCUS images and troubleshoot common errors.

Alison LePera, DO, PhD

A Ph.D. in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Dr. LePera received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Currently Dr. LePera is an Attending Physician at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and Carilion Giles Community Hospital. She also serves as Discipline Chair for Emergency Medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic in Blacksburg, VA. She is active in the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and has participated in the Freedom Ride Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program.
