Managing & Treating Dermatologic Emergencies

This presentation will provide healthcare professionals with essential insights into the critical situations they may encounter in dermatology. Attendees will learn to recognize various dermatological emergencies, such as severe allergic reactions, acute infections, and conditions like toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme. The session will focus on the prompt identification, assessment, and management of these urgent cases, emphasizing evidence-based treatment protocols to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, the presentation will highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and timely intervention to prevent complications.

Learning Objectives:
•    Learners will classify dermatological emergencies, distinguishing them from less urgent skin conditions.
•    Learners will identify and describe common dermatological emergencies such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, necrotizing fasciitis, and severe drug reactions.
•    Learners will identify common complications associated with dermatological emergencies and their impact on patient prognosis.

This program is co-sponsored by the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon (OPSO). Both osteopathic associations are accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.

The program has been designated for a maximum of one (1) AOA Category 1-A Credit(s) by the co-sponsors who have authorized the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons to report CME and specialty credits to the AOA commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Grievance Policy:

Eric Yang, MD

Dr. Eric Yang graduated college with a degree in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego. He then earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago, Illinois. He then completed his internship at Virginia Mason Medical Center and his residency in Dermatology at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Yang subsequently completed an ACGME-accredited Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Yang is board-certified in Dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology.

Dr. Yang is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and has served on the AAD Drug Pricing and Transparency Task Force and the Patient Access and Payer Relations Committee. He has authored over 40 journal articles, including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Pediatrics, and JAMA Network Open.
