When to be Manipulative: Tips and Tricks for Screening Patients
There is a frequent emphasis on performing OMM in the clinical practice. However, due to time constraints, setting limitations, and/or training practitioners may not feel it is appropriate to personally treat their patients. Fortunately, treating with OMM is only half of Osteopathy and the first half is screening and determining the presence of somatic dysfunctions.
Learning Objectives:
The learner will be able to quickly screen and identify patient would are likely to benefit from OMM.
The learner will be able to quickly screen and identify patients who are unlikely to benefit from OMM.
The learner will develop verbiage to help manage patient’s expectations and goals of treatment when making OMM referrals.

Dr. Bethany Powers, D.O.
Dr. Powers is the OMM Department Chair at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and she practices medicine at Palmetto Proactive Healthcare. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and has completed coursework through the Cranial Academy and Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation. She also has a special interest in preventative medicine and non-operative orthopedic care. Dr. Powers received her medical degree from Georgia Campus – Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she received the Rubel (Ob-Gyn) and the Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Awards. She completed Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship at Florida Hospital East Orlando in Orlando, FL. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
