What Matters in the End: Teaching Empathy and Compassion at the End of Life- Robert Sorrells, PhD

In this session, Dr. Sorrells will discuss educating healthcare students, doctors, and the community on end-of-life issues. PNWU has hosted the Norm Hyatt What Matters in the End conference for the past five years with internationally known speakers, local palliative and hospice care interprofessional providers, organ donors, recipients, and surgeons, as well as culturally centered events discussing these issues.

The Washington Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association as a Category 1 CME Sponsor.

Robert Sorrells, PhD

Dr. Sorrells earned his PhD from the University of Georgia and then completed a one-year post doc in the UGA Center for Artificial Intelligence where he did mathematical models of cognition. He moved to Yakima and joined PNWU in 2007 and developed the neuroscience curriculum and helped establish the anatomy lab and curriculum. With the help of students and community physicians, he developed the Norm Hyatt What Matters in the End conference for community, students, and CME. This conference has drawn internationally known speakers and is in its fifth year.
