This presentation on pediatric asthma focuses on the essential components of diagnosing and treating asthma in children and strategies for controlling asthma triggers. The presenter reviews the key symptoms of asthma and the importance of a comprehensive evaluation, which often includes detailed patient history and lung function tests. For treatment, the presenter recommends using inhaled corticosteroids as the cornerstone of long-term management and the potential need for rescue inhalers during acute episodes. Additionally, the presentation addresses the significance of identifying and managing environmental triggers, such as allergens and pollutants, with practical advice for caregivers on reducing exposure at home and in school.
Learning Objectives:
1) Learners will gain familiarity with the latest evidence-based guidelines for managing common pediatric illnesses, including updated treatment protocols, diagnostic criteria, and follow-up care recommendations.
2) Learners will understand the importance of preventive measures, such as immunizations and education on hygiene practices, in reducing the incidence of these common pediatric conditions.
3) Learners will learn to identify potential complications associated with each of the common pediatric illnesses covered, as well as establish clear criteria for referrals to specialists when necessary.
4) Learners will be able to recognize the common signs and symptoms associated with ear infections, colds, allergies, strep throat, and pink eye, enabling accurate diagnosis.
5) Learners will develop effective strategies for communicating with patients and their caregivers about these illnesses, including explaining the nature of the illness, management options, and preventive measures.

Dr. Kathryn Guymon is a graduate of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Guymon is a General Pediatrician at the Center for Excellence at the University of Missouri. She is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Guyman is board-certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Dr. Guymon is a member of the American Academy of Pediatricians. Dr. Guymon's goal is to provide a comfortable environment where patients and parents can share exciting moments, milestones, and concerns during a child's early formative years. She has a special interest in autism spectrum disorder and caring for children who are or have been in foster care.
Dr. Guyman is a mid-Missouri native and enjoys golfing, traveling, spending time with her husband, and rooting for the Cubs with their golden doodle, Wrigley.
