Overview of Gulf War Illness

Learning Objectives:

Following completion of this program, attendees shall be able to:

1. Describe key deployment-related exposure concerns and epidemiology of Gulf War illness among 1990-1991 Gulf War Veterans.
2. Identify the core clinical features and diagnostic criteria for Gulf War Illness and for related conditions (Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
3. Apply evidence-based management strategies and VA/DoD clinical practice guideline recommendations to support veteran care and improve symptom burden.

The South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society designates this program for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Edward Shadiack, DO, MPH, Clinical Consult Lead Physician, New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center

Dr. Edward C. Shadiack III is an osteopathic physician board certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Family Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. He also holds an additional certification in Pain Medicine and completed clinical fellowships in War-Related Illness and in Mitochondrial Medicine.

Dr. Shadiack serves as the Clinical Consult Lead Physician at the New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC), a national referral program for Veterans experiencing chronic, medically unexplained symptoms and exposure-related health concerns. In this role, he conducts comprehensive evaluations, synthesizes complex medical histories, and develops individualized, evidence-based recommendations to support patient care across the VA healthcare system.
