Common Skin Disorders in Childhood


At the end of this presentation, the viewer will be able to do the following:

  • Summarize and describe the different types of skin lesions.
  • Discuss two examples of each type of skin lesion and their appearance.
  • List the etiology of some common skin lesions.
  • Identify pictures of lesions and explain the lesion type.

Ava C. Stanczak, D.O., is currently professor of Pediatrics and OPP at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Stanczak was Chair of Primary Care and Pediatrics at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was previously Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics at LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a former Chair of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. She was Assistant Professor and Discipline Chair of Pediatrics, at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine from the opening in August 2003, until October 2007. Dr. Stanczak has been in practice for thirty-nine years and cares for many people of all ages with special needs. She is a 1983 graduate of University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Stanczak was also Chair of Pediatrics at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1989 until 1992. Other teaching appointments include University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and University of Texas at Arlington. Stanczak is a graduate of the Costin Institute for Osteopathic Educators, where her capstone project was preceptor training and faculty development. She was the 2007 winner of the national Northrup Award for Osteopathic Educator of the Year. Education: B.A. Biology, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas Doctor of Osteopathy University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas (TCOM) Costin Institute for Osteopathic Medical Educators, second cohort, 2006Licensure and Certification: Active licenses in Texas and Tennessee. Inactive licenses in Virginia, Kentucky, Hawaii, and Maine Board certified: Pediatrics from American Board of Osteopathic Pediatrics, Diplomate, American Board of Urgent Care Medicine Honors and Awards: 2007 Northrup Award for Osteopathic Educators, 2024 Lifetime Career Achievement Award, American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians. Research Interests: caring for persons with special needs.
