2023 Primary Care Update


Literature and research updates are necessary for all practicing physicians in order to stay current among the vast amount of literature with which we are inundated daily.  PubMed statistics state more than one million papers are cited each year into their database. How does a primary care physician pick and choose what evidence might be useful in their patient population? This lecture will be reminiscent of “reports from the field” from decades past, polling practicing family physicians for opinions using the question, “I changed my practice this year when I became aware of evidence that….”

Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss evidence-informed practice changing facts from practicing family physicians to include:
  • Review ACIP update for PCV20 and view a helpful free phone app
  • Discuss evidence behind the initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors for Heart Failure
  • Review the latest update on Suboxone prescribing in nationally and locally
  • Learn about the newest USPSTF statement for ASA use for Primary Cardiac Prevention
  • Understand practice changing tips about alternatives to traditional hypertension management and a novel treatment for migraines
  • Review evidence for nutritional intervention for lowering LDL from lifestyle medicine literature

Joy Elliott

Joy Elliott, DO - Dr. Elliott graduated from the West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency in Family Medicine at VCU Riverside Family Medicine Residency Program in Newport News, Virginia.  A former Clinical Instructor at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, currently Dr. Elliott is the Osteopathic Program Director at Riverside Family Medicine Residency Program.
