Learning Objectives
Following the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:
• Discuss the etiology of common conditions encountered in the outpatient clinic, including the pathophysiology of somatic dysfunction
• Review the mechanism of action for OMM techniques used to treat the common conditions
• Provide evidence for the efficacy of OMT
• Understand adverse effects of OMT
• Discuss benefits and risks of alternative treatments, including common medications and procedures
• Consider advantages of different methods of somatic dysfunction diagnosis: static landmarks vs. motion testing vs. combined
• Perform simple OMM techniques that are effective for common conditions
• Describe indications for and contraindications to the OMM techniques presented
• Provide patients with a home exercise plan to complement in-office OMT
• Review billing and coding guidelines for OMT
Dr. Gregory Heller serves as the Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Osteopathic Principles and Practices at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his DO degree from Midwestern University – Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residencies in Family Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Plus One, Midwestern University – Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified in both Family Medicine and Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.
