Healthcare costs are climbing, the burden on the system is unsustainable. Lifestyle practices and health habits are the most important determinants of positive health outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Following this presentation, attendees should be able to:

  1. Understand the current trend of chronic diseases in USA
  2. Be able to answer the questions, "What is Lifestyle Medicine?"
  3. Cite the scientific evidence that demonstrates how risk factors influence health outcomes.

Dr. Karmi Patel, MD

Karmi Patel, MD FACP is a practicing physician, double board certified in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Patel attended Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica and did her residency at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ where she also served as chief resident and a teaching attending after her training. She was recipient of Sister Marie dePazzi, C.S.J.P. Outstanding Resident Award during her senior year. She currently practices at William C Tallent Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Knoxville, TN. Dr. Patel has been part of American College of Lifestyle Medicine and a founding member of Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine since 2017. American Board of Lifestyle Medicine offered its 2nd US based Lifestyle medicine certification exam in 2018 which Dr. Patel took and became a diplomate of American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

Dr. Patel grew up in India and was exposed to herbal medicine with Ayurvedic practice which led to her interest in implementing a whole food, plant based (WFPB) approach for treating, preventing and reversing diseases. Dr. Patel is firm believer in the true Hippocrates oath- “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”


Dr. Patel and her husband have two kids (ages 12 and 9) and the entire family follows the whole food plant based lifestyle. 

Teresa Nardi, CHTP

Theresa Nardi CHTP is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, a Certified Spiritual Director, a Registered Yoga Instructor, and has a BS in General Business. Previously, she and her husband Dean were entrepreneurs in an auto racing magazine publishing business, which they started and managed for nearly 20 years.

By " night " Theresa developed her passion for synthesizing the mysticism of Eastern and Western thought, studying and practicing various meditation disciplines and energy healing techniques, which include Lectio Divina, Centering Prayer, Babaji ' s Kriya Yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Healing Touch, spiritual direction, sound therapy (binaural beats), dream analysis, and food as medicine, including essential oils. She taught classes and led retreats in ashrams, monasteries, and retreat centers within the United States, Canada, India, and Brazil. She currently resides in West Jefferson, NC with her husband Dean, their four horses, two dogs, and one cat. They have two children and three grandchildren.
