Urolithiasis: A Real Pain


Following the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the pathophysiology of urolithiasis
  1. Describe medical management of kidney stones
  1. Understand the surgical management of renal and ureteral stones
  1. Identify when to refer to a urologist

Kenneth Sands, DO

Dr. Sands grew up on a small farm in southwest Virginia, where he enjoyed exploring the woods and fishing on the river. He attended Randolph–Macon College in Ashland, where he studied economics and business, and received his medical degree and an MBA from Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee.

He completed his urology residency training at Michigan State University and an endourology and minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He then joined the faculty at Washington University as an assistant professor of urology for several years before coming to UVA Health.

Dr. Sands is the author of a number of peer-reviewed journal articles on urology and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urology and the Journal of Endourology.
