Five Minute OMT for Busy Practices (OMM Lecture & Lab)

It is estimated that 20% of visits to primary care offices are for musculoskeletal complaints. The current healthcare system requires physicians to have limited patient contact time. As a result it is necessary to efficiently and effectively evaluate patients and provide effective treatment, workup, and referrals. For these musculoskeletal complaints Osteopathic physicians have a special skill set that allows them to perform hands on assessments and treatment, through OMT. There are common complaints and conditions that present on a regular basis that can be resolved or benefited by OMT. Again doing this efficiently in a busy office with limited time is essential. This lecture and workshop will provide education and hands on practice for efficient and effective evaluation and treatment of these complaints such as tight hip flexors, lateral hip pain, piriformis syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, sinusitis, shoulder pain.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate common pain complaints of the pelvis/hip/back related to muscular dysfunction of the psoas, piriformis, gluteus medius, and other muscles in these groups
  • Evaluate common complaint of paresthesia in the median nerve distribution of the hand
  • Evaluate shoulder pain
  • Describe the osteopathic assessment of the sinuses
  • Create a treatment plan including OMT and HEP for the above complaints
