Dr. Brandon Weeks, DO, MPH is originally from Houma, Louisiana and completed undergrad at LSU before earning is osteopathic degree and Master’s in Public Health from Nova Southeastern University COM in 2011.  Dr. Weeks then went on to family medicine residency at University of Texas Southwestern in Austin, Texas.  After residency Dr. Weeks spent 2 years working in Brooklyn, NY at a community health center before returning home to Louisiana where he now practices near Baton Rouge in an outpatient setting with Ochsner Health.  He currently serves as Lead Physician at Ochsner Iberville.

Dr. Jamie Wright, DO holds board certification in obstetrics and gynecology.  During his early years he practiced in Natchitoches, Louisiana and became active in LOMA before he relocated to Arizona.  He earned his medical degree in 2001 at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency training at Mercy General Health Partners in Muskegon in 2005.  Dr. Wright also holds a master’s degree in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine and a Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine.  He was Chief Operation Officer and Medical Director of True Health Medical, LLC in the Phoenix Metro area in Arizona where he lived before recently returning to Natchitoches. Dr. Wright is co-founder and Medical Director of Mulligan Medical, an Arizona business that focuses on non-drug pain treatment.  To stay in touch with traditional healthcare delivery, Dr. Wright performs in-home medical assessments for Medicare plans.  Dr. Wright has an interest in developing business models that bring economic value by improving the long-term well-being of patients, families, and workers.

Dr. Gwenn Jackson, MD is Associate Professor and Discipline Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Louisiana Campus.  After completing her medical education and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology with LSU New Orleans School of Medicine, Dr. Jackson returned to her hometown of Monroe, LA for private practice. Over her 29 years in group practice she took numerous leadership positions in the local hospital, professional and community organizations and earned the designation of Certified Physician Executive. She serves on the AMA Relative Value Update Committee, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Committee on Health Economics and Coding, and the Louisiana State Medical Society Board of Governors.  Dr. Jackson and her husband are active in community volunteer organizations and annually participate in international missions.

Dr. Justin Sherman earned his BS in Biology from the University of Mississippi in Oxford and completed a Master of Combined Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.  He then graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 1999.  He completed a residency in Primary Care in 2000 at Methodist Healthcare Hospital in Memphis, TN.  His specialty is ambulatory care.  For nine years, Dr. Sherman taught at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) College of Pharmacy before taking a position in 2009 at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Jackson where he is currently Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice.  He also holds an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.  Dr. Sherman has developed diabetes care services (medication therapy management services) at the UMMC Lakeland Family Medical Clinic in Jackson, Mississippi.  He has also developed smoking cessation and anticoagulation services.  He teaches a wide range of topics in ambulatory care, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, men’s health issues, COPD, smoking cessation, and heart failure. He is actively involved in publishing and presentation activities and has over 60 manuscripts and book chapters and has published a book titled Community and Clinical Pharmacy Services:  A Step-by-Step Approach.  Dr. Sherman frequently presents pharmaceutical updates at national, regional, state, and local scientific meetings.  He has been a frequent speaker for LOMA and we welcome him again to this meeting.

After receiving her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania,  Dr. Chhaya attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)– School of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her residency at UMDNJ – Robert  Wood Johnson University Hospital and remained on for a 4th year as Chief Resident.

She completed her fellowship in Rheumatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and then moved with her  husband to Boston where she joined the faculty in the Department of Rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. 

After the birth of her daughter, she moved to Scottsdale, AZ where she joined Arizona Arthritis and Rheumatology Associates for several years, had her son in 2009 and is now back to indulging her passion for academic medicine.  She is Division Chair of Rheumatology  and Specialty Ambulatory Medical Director at Valleywise Health Systems and Associate Professor at Creighton Medical School.  She is also Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona Department of Internal Medicine.

Her goal is to convince at least 1-2 residents a year to pursue the field of Rheumatology and so far so good!

When she is not talking Rheum, she loves to perform Latin dance, cook and entertain with food, and talk all kinds of Saints, Eagles and Cardinals Football!

Dr. Dery is an infectious disease physician and public health practitioner. He is the Chief Innovation Officer and Medical Director for infectious diseases at Access Health Louisiana, the largest Federally Qualified Health Center in Louisiana with 35 clinics statewide. Board-certified in infectious diseases and internal medicine, Dr. Dery has worked as a trauma physician for ten years with LifeFlight helicopter programs across the U.S. and as an emergency physician on the Navajo Nation and the Tulane University Health System. As an infectious disease physician, Dr. Dery responded to several global epidemics, including Lassa fever virus in Guinea and Ebola virus disease in Sierra Leone. At home in New Orleans, Dr. Dery actively helped to lead the response to COVID-19 city-wide. As an emergency physician, Dr. Dery ran the medical clinic for Katrina evacuees at the Astrodome. First on the scene in the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in 2010, Dr. Dery helped build and manage the American field hospital. Recently, Dr. Dery responded to the violent Russian conflict in Ukraine in May and June; Dr. Dery initiated a newly designed course called the Armed Conflict Trauma Training Course, with very positive results.  Dr. Dery earned his MS in Public health at Loma Linda School of Public Health in 1994 and completed his osteopathic degree at University of New England COM in 1998.  He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Case Western Reserve’s MetroHealth Medical Center, and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at Tulane University in 2008.

J. Mark Bailey, DO, PhD is a native Mississippian who attended Millsaps College as an undergraduate and the University of MS Medical Center for his PhD in Anatomy.  He attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona California and afterwards relocated to Birmingham Alabama for internship and residency.  Dr. Bailey was in private practice for 13 years and is now Professor of Neurology and Anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).  He is board certified in both Neurology and Pain. Dr. Bailey is a past president of the Alabama Osteopathic Medical Association.  He is President-elect and a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists.  Dr. Bailey participated in the creation of the Osteopathic Pain Medicine Boards and serves as the AOA advisor to the AMA CPT committee.  He is the AOA representative to the Federation of State Medical Boards Opioid Task Force as well as the American Academy of Neurology representative to the AMA Opioid Task Force.

Dr. Brandy Panunti, MD is the System Chair of Endocrinology for the Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Senior Lecturer for the Ochsner Clinical School, University of Queensland.  She earned her medical degree in 1999 from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.  She completed her residency in Internal Medicine in 2002 followed by her fellowship in Endocrinology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2006.  Dr. Panunti joined the Ochsner Clinic Foundation, Section of Endocrinology in 2006.  She practices endocrinology at the Ochsner Jefferson Highway campus and at the Tchoupitoulas site.  In addition to practicing general endocrinology, she specializes in transgender care and helped develop Ochsner’s Transgender Patient Care Physician Training Modules, Ochsner’s EPIC transgender toolkit, and the Ochsner Multi-disciplinary Gender Clinic.Since 2016 Dr. Panunti has been the Endocrinology Section Editor for MedsStudy’s Internal Medicine core curriculum.  She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and holds memberships the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, World Professional Association of Transgender Health, and the Endocrine Society.

Michael W. Hailey, MD was born in Louisville, Mississippi.  He attended the Mississippi School for Math and Science, Delta State University, and Tulane Medical School. After completing his General Surgery Residency in Birmingham, AL at Carraway Methodist Medical Center – he returned to Baton Rouge to practice.  In 2005, he established Breast Specialty of Baton Rouge to call attention to cancer and diseases of the breast.  For many years, he has been involved with Woman’s Hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center providing leadership and care for patients. He annually gives several community and physician-based lectures.  Dr. Hailey is currently in solo private practice on the campus of Woman’s Hospital.  His team has approximately 12,000 patient encounters per year and he annually performs over 1000 surgical procedures and sees 300 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.  Dr. Hailey believes in true Multi-Disciplinary Care for each breast cancer patient.  He believes that this care begins at the time of a breast cancer diagnosis and is carried into survivorship. Dr. Hailey works with all medical disciplines to ensure state-of-the-art care for his patients. His efforts led to accreditation of Woman’s Hospital by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. He was instrumental in their Cancer Navigator Program that has led to improved support after a diagnosis of breast cancer. He continues to work with local professionals to offer better education and care for all breast patients.

Dr. Randy Aldret is the Assistant Dean for Research, Director of Faculty Development, and Associate Professor of Family and Sports Medicine at the VCOM-LAcampus in Monroe. He was previously Associate Professor and Director of the Athletic Training Program at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. He holds the Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Oklahoma State University, an MS in Health and Sports Sciences fromUniversity of Oklahoma, and the BS in Kinesiology from LSU. He has been a practicing athletic trainer since 1997, with experience in high school, arena football and collegiate settings, and he served as an adjunct professor at University of Tulsa and Radford University. He was awarded the School of Kinesiology Faculty Member of the Year Award in 2016 at ULL and was elected Director of Continuing Education for the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association. In June 2021, Dr. Aldret received the Athletic Trainer Service Award from the National Athletic Trainers Associationfor his career-long service commitment. In 2017, Dr. Aldret servedas an athletic trainer at the US Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and with USA Wrestling and traveled to tournaments in Belarus and Turkey. He served onthe medical team for the 2019 ParaPan American Games in Lima, Peru and onthe USOPC medical team for the 2021 United States Paralympic team in Tokyo. Dr. Aldret’s research interests are best practices in athletic training education, athlete diabetes management, novel concussion biomarkers, and athletic performance and post-eligibility health outcomes.

Joseph A. Giaimo, DO, MACOI, FCCP, is AOA board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine. He has been working in private practice in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for more than 30 years. He is a master fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

After earning his osteopathic medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), Dr. Giaimo completed a rotating internship at the former Metropolitan Hospital of Philadelphia. He later completed his residency and fellowship training at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Giaimo has served the osteopathic profession throughout his career. From 2004-2005, he served as President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA). In 2010, he was honored with the FOMA Physician of the Year award. Dr. Giaimo has always had an interest in health policy: its effect on practicing physicians and patients access to care. In 2006, he completed the AOA’s health policy fellowship program.  Later, he was recognized with a presidential appointment--serving on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council (PPAC), which provided input on CMS rules and implementation. He has served on the AOA Board of Trustees since 2008 while remaining active in his local community; working as President of the Palm Beach County American Lung Association and Leadership Palm Beach County.

Dr. Giaimo also has a desire to serve his country. In 1990, after completing his fellowship training, he joined the Naval Reserves. Dr. Giaimo was attached to a mobile fleet hospital unit stationed in: Jacksonville, Pensacola, San Diego, Bethesda, MD, Naples, Italy and onboard the USS Shreveport and the USS Wasp. He attained the rank of Commander.

Dr. Giaimo and his wife Shannon have two children and a dog (Rex), and live in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Dr. Ashley Weiss, DO, MPH is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has a wide range of clinical and academic interests.  She completed her medical education at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton Florida in 2008 and her psychiatry residency as well as her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Tulane University in 2013.  Dr. Weiss developed and founded the Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic (EPIC-NOLA) in August 2015, which is focused on providing comprehensive care for adolescents and young adults experiencing their first episode of psychosis associated with emergence of severe mental illnesses, mainly the schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. In parallel to the EPIC-NOLA clinic, she also launched CALM-Clear Answers to Louisiana Mental Health in Spring 2016. CALM is a psychosis early detection campaign aimed at increasing community awareness of psychosis, debunking myths surrounding psychosis, and fundraising to enhance activities for those in treatment for first-episode psychosis. Currently, as a part-time forensic psychiatry fellow, she is providing clinical care at Orleans Justice Center and Juvenile Justice Intervention Center, as well as at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health Systems. Additionally, Dr. Weiss is the Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry for the Tulane University School of Medicine.

Dr. Randy Devereaux is an Associate Professor and Discipline Chair for Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, and Public Health at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Louisiana Campus. He also serves as the Department Chair for Biomedical Sciences. He has an MSPH from the Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina and a PhD in Health Education/Health Promotion/Health Behavior from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). His training included a competitive internship at the CDC in Atlanta.  During his 25-year career, he has taught medical school courses in neuroscience, psychiatry, population health, health promotion, disease prevention, epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, and evidence-based medicine and been the Research Director for several Graduate Medical Education programs, including Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Transition Year. Before joining VCOM, Dr. Devereaux was Program Director for the Department of Community Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA. His additional roles at Mercer included course director of four population health and evidence-based medicine courses and Assistant Director of the 350 + physician Community Preceptor Network. He has mentored first-, second-, and fourth-year students conducting community- and clinical-based interventions during their rotations in medically underserved and rural Georgia. Dr. Devereaux has received seven teaching awards since 2013.  Dr. Devereaux’s research interests include both public health and clinical studies. He has been director or manager for several NIH-funded studies. His research has included poverty, adolescent development, HIV & STI prevention, teen pregnancy prevention, drinking and driving, the epidemiology of sepsis, acute coronary syndrome, and medication adherence. His emerging research interests include the effects of yoga, meditation, breathing, and mindfulness on stress reduction, reducing hypertension, and increasing perceived quality of life.

Melissa Lipsmeyer joined VCOM-Louisiana in September 2019 as Discipline Chair and Assistant Professor for Cell Biology and Physiology. Dr. Lipsmeyer is a native of West Monroe, Louisiana and attended The University of Louisiana at Monroe where she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology. During her Masters, she focused on transcriptional regulation of gonadal development in the model organism C. elegans.  Afterwards, she attended the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock for her PhD in Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics. Her PhD focused on transcriptional regulation of embryo implantation and the etiology of endometriosis utilizing mouse models. Her dissertation also explored the role of high-fat diet on endometriosis development. Dr. Lipsmeyer has completed two post-doctoral fellowships. The first, a basic science post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, investigating biochemical post-translational modifications of collagen in Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Dr. Lipsmeyer’s second post-doctoral Fellowship was performed at the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center and focused her research efforts on maternal obesity’s influence on offspring metabolic outcomes and breast milk composition utilizing clinical trials with human subjects. Dr. Lipsmeyer’s current interests are how the gut microbiome and diet composition regulate health of ovary and placenta in the context of obesity. Dr. Lipsmeyer’s favorite thing about VCOM-LA is the faculty and staff she works with, the amazing and determined students, and having the ability to bridge basic and translational science with physicians in the Monroe area. She is most excited for the opportunities and growth that VCOM-LA will bring to her hometown area and the state of Louisiana.

Dr. Adam Morrow, PhD is an Associate Professor for Cell Biology and Physiology at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Louisiana Campus. He instructs first- and second-year medical students through formal lectures, integrated sessions, small group work, and team-based learning approaches. He previously served as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also conducted research as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Lung Biology at the University of South Alabama where he primarily focused on acute lung injury and repair using Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of pulmonary endothelial cells as his injury model. He was awarded two separate American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowships for his work focusing on P. aeruginosa stimulating release of high molecular weight endothelial tau and its ability to propagate cellular injury. Dr. Morrow received his PhD from the University of Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile in Basic Medical Sciences with a focus in cancer biology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute where hediscovered a novel role for the tumor suppressor Merlin in breast cancer. He received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Central Arkansas where hestudied the role of ADAM proteins in cellular inflammation and adhesion.

Dr. Paul Friedlander is a fellowship-trained head and neck surgeon who has been treating the private, public, and Veteran population in the New Orleans area since 1997. He is an Otolaryngologist who completed a Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. He serves as the Chairman of Otolaryngology at Tulane Medical Center. His clinical practice is focused on Head and Neck Oncology. His academic focus is the development of strategies that will improve regional outcomes for patients with cancer. His current focus is promoting early detection and awareness of head and neck cancer in the inner city of New Orleans. He has been recognized for his work in treating the underserved through the American Cancer Society Spirit Award, the New Orleans City Business Health Care Heroes, and the “Unsung Hero” Award from the CLOUT Ministerial Alliance in 2013. Dr. Friedlanderis the founder of the Greater New Orleans Coalition on Cancer Disparities – a Faith-Based Organization whose mission is to identify and address health care disparity in the inner city of New Orleans. Of particular importance to this project, is Dr. Friedlander’s relationship to both the religious and medical community that will utilize a Faith-Based framework to address disparities for head and neck cancer.

Dr. John Lipka, MD is an assistant professor and Discipline Chair of Surgery and Anatomy at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Louisiana Campus.  He also serves as a team physician for the University of Louisiana Monroe. Dr. Lipka completed his BS in Electrical Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL followed by an MS in Biomedical Engineering at LA Tech, after which he worked as a research associate and biomedical engineer in an orthopedic biomechanics laboratory.  He then earned his medical degree at LSU Shreveport in 1992.  He interned at Charity Hospital of New Orleans – Tulane University and completed his residency in General Surgery at LSU-Shreveport in 1998 where he served as Chief Resident.  He has since practiced in several north Louisiana locations. Most recently before joining the VCOM-LA faculty he served on the medical staff at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, as Medical Director at Sterlington Rehabilitation Hospital in Bastrop, and as Medical Director/Supervising Physician in the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Dr. Rebekah Morrow, PhD has a BS in chemistry from the University of Central Arkansas and completed her PhD in Basic Medical Sciences with a focus on Lung Biology at the University of South Alabama in 2015. Her dissertation focused on the functional effects of antibody glycosylation on endothelial function in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). She has taught microbiology and immunology to osteopathic medical students for 5 years including from 2016-2020 at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. She currently teachesas an Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at VCOM-LA in Monroe where she is Discipline Chair for Immunology and Microbiology. Dr. Jed Robinson, DO is a native of Alexandria, LA.  At an early age, his family relocated to rural Franklin Parish.  After high school graduation in 1998 from Franklin Academy in Winnsboro, LA he attended and graduated from Tulane University in 2002 with a BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology.  He completed medical school at the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (now called Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine) in Pikeville, KY in 2009.  Dr. Robinson completed his residency in Urological Surgery at the world-renowned Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, in 2014 and was the chief resident during the 2013-2014 academic year.  After residency, Dr. Robinson returned home to Franklin Parish to begin his practice at Franklin Medical Center.  He is now with Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe.  He is the current President of the Louisiana Osteopathic Medical Association.

Jason A. Sneed, DO is Asst Prof and Chair of OMM at VCOM-Louisiana.  He completed a degree in psychology at the University of Virginia in 2002 and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008 at Edward Via-Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine -Virginia.  Dr. Sneed then completed his family medicine residency at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, OH in 2011. He earned a plus one neuromusculoskeletal medicine residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, ME.  After a year at NextCare Urgent Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Dr. Sneed founded Old Dominion Osteopathic Medicine in Fredericksburg, VA and ran it for 7 years before relocating to VCOM-LA in in 2020.  Dr. Sneed has been an active academic since 2011 serving as preceptor for FM and NMM/OMM residents and for OMS-3 and OMS-4 rotations for four COMs until 2020.  Dr. Sneed previously served on the clinical teaching faculty at Ohio University COM, at University of New England COM and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, and as an Assistant Professor at VCOM-Virginia. In 2020, Dr. Sneed made the transition to VCOM-LA in Monroe where he is actively teaching and training the next generation of osteopathic physicians in the principles of primary care and osteopathic medicine.

Ray L. Morrison, DO, of Monroe, Louisiana, is an AOA board-certified surgeon and fellow of the American College of Osteopathic.  He was founding Dean of the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine – Louisiana on the University of Louisiana – Monroe campus which opened in July 2020 with its inaugural class.  He now serves as Dean Emeritus and Vice President for College Advancement.  Prior to his role with VCOM-LA, Dr. Morrison was on faculty at the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was chairman of surgery, department of specialty medicine.  Before joining LUCOM, he served as an assistant professor of surgery in the department of rural and family practice at the University of North Texas Health Science Center – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth (UNTHSC/TCOM).  Dr. Morrison has served as Speaker of the AOA House of Delegates since 2014 and has also served the AOA in other capacities, including as a member of the Bureau of State Government Affairs, Constitution and Bylaws Committee, and the Committee on Governance and Organizational Structure.   After earning his osteopathic medical degree from UNTHSC/TCOM, Dr. Morrison completed a rotating internship at the former Northeast Community Hospital in Bedford, Texas, followed by residency training at the former Fort Worth Osteopathic Medical Center in Fort Worth; the former Dallas/Fort Worth Medical Center in Grand Prairie, Texas; and at Springfield Hospital in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, where he served as chief resident.
