COVID-19 Update and Lessons

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1.5 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Rachel Reimer, PhD's Profile

Rachel Reimer, PhD Related Seminars and Products


Rachel Reimer, PhD is an Associate Professor and the Chair of the department of public health at Des Moines University. Additionally, she currently serves as the Program Director for both the CEPH-accredited MPH program as well as the CAHME-accredited MHA program. Prior to leading the faculty, staff, and students in the department of public health at DMU, Dr. Reimer served as an assistant professor in the MPH program, and taught courses on social and behavioral sciences, research methods, intervention science, maternal and child health. Dr. Reimer’s public health research has covered a number of topics including healthy eating and exercise among families, HPV vaccination behaviors, racial / ethnic disparities in smoking behavior and beliefs, and more recently examining epigenetic markers among tobacco users.

Dr. Reimer obtained her Bachelor of Scienceat the University of Iowa, and her Master’s and PhDs from Iowa State University in the Department of Psychology.

Aneesa Afroze, MD, MPH, FACP, AAHIVS, CTH's Profile

Dr. ANEESA AFROZE is an infectious disease consultant at MercyOne since 2008. She is board certified in Infectious Diseases, certified in Travel Health (CTH), and a credentialed HIV Specialist (AAHIVS) by American Academy of HIV Medicine. Her special interests include Antimicrobial Stewardship, Travel and Tropical medicine, Transplant infectious diseases, Infections in immuno-compromised patients, HIV/AIDS, Global Health, and Hospital Epidemiology.

Dr. Afroze has served in various leadership positions andhas been a member of several committees in past years. She is the current President of MercyOne medical staff and serves as Director of Anti-Microbial Stewardship Program. She has spearheaded various quality improvement projects with pharmacists and residents. She is a faculty and mentor to residents at MercyOne and students at Des Moines University (DMU).

Paul Volker, MD's Profile

Dr. Volker has been a member of the faculty of Des Moines University since May 2015.  Prior to that he was a member of a small group practice for over 25 years in Boone, Iowa. Dr. Volker provides care for patients of all ages—with an emphasis on older adults—in the DMU family medicine clinic and precepts third- and fourth-year students there. Dr. Volker is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is also board-certified in Geriatric Medicine.  He has received numerous citations including the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, their Educator of the Year Award in 2019, and the DMU Dean’s Award for Outstanding Advisor/Mentor in 2017.


Tom Benzoni, DO's Profile

Dr. Benzoni has practiced EM since completing medical school in 1983. He spent 4 years with the Public Health Service in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. There he helped to build a hospital that still functions today. After a stint in New York, he lived, worked and developed a trauma center in Sioux City, where he put DC10s in corn fields. He worked with the state of Iowa in developing Iowa’s trauma system. He has worked with patients in pain for his entire career, working before the opioid epidemic. Dr. Benzoni currently works at a Trauma Center in Des Moines and teaches medical and PA students.

Kaaren Olesen, DO's Profile

Kaaren R. Olesen, D.O. is a graduate of Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa.  She completed a rotating internship and OB/GYN residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Michigan.  She is board certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Olesen joined the medical staff at Broadlawn's Medical Center in October 2019. She is a staff physician in the OB/GYN Department. She is still accepting new patients and referrals.
