Description

The primary care physician plays an important role in end of life care and palliative medicine.  The goal of this lecture is to give the PCP and/or specialist the tools to properly identify patients who qualify for hospice care.  It is also designed to provide tools for evaluation of pain and symptom management in the setting of advanced and complex disease.  This presentation will also review prognostication tools, methods to effectively discuss goals of care, and treatment recommendations encountered in the hospice/palliative care setting.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify methods of functional scale classification and prognostication techniques for the terminally ill patient
2. Review practical methods to discuss goals of care in a clinical office or hospital setting
3. Discuss common symptoms encountered at the end of life and effective management techniques

Dr Greg Copeland is the chair of Primary Care medicine at California Health Sciences University College of osteopathic medicine in central California.  He is also a practicing physician who focusses on geriatric medicine, palliative care and hospice patients.  He is board certified in family medicine as well as hospice & palliative medicine. Dr. Copeland has worked in a variety of healthcare settings in Fresno, CA including being the medical director of a local hospice and PACE program.  He also oversees an outpatient medicine clinic and performs inpatient palliative care consults.
