Description

The case-based lecture begins with an introduction to normal sleep physiology with an emphasis for pediatric sleep.  Then various cases are presented to introduce common pediatric sleep disorders such as behavioral insomnia of childhood, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and narcolepsy.  Presentation and treatments of each condition are discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Discuss normal sleep physiology in children and the effects of aging in sleep
2.  Introduce the various types of pediatric sleep disorders besides obstructive sleep apnea
3.  Recognize treatments for various types of pediatric sleep disorders

Dr. Harry C. Yuan is a board certified pediatric pulmonologist and sleep physician.  He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences.  He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and his pediatric pulmonology/sleep fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.  Dr. Yuan is currently the Medical Director of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at Children’s Hospital at Providence in Anchorage and the Pediatric Medical Director for Alaska Sleep Clinic.  His areas of interest are asthma, pulmonary issues related to neuromuscular disorders, cystic fibrosis, and pediatric sleep disorders.  In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, exciting his gastronomic senses, scuba diving, karate, and spending time with family.
