Short Description:
Over 60% of health care providers experience one or more symptoms of burnout. The perceived clinician burden resulting in burnout arises from factors such as poor electronic health record (EHR) usability and documentation burden leading to less clinical time with patients. Burnout can have detrimental effects on health care quality and contributes to increased medical errors, decreased patient satisfaction, substance use, workforce attrition, and suicide. By removing redundant data entry and low value tasks from the electronic health record, we can reduce the administrative burden from the EHR, decrease cognitive load and allow physicians to document more efficiently.

Hypertension is one of the most common chronic medical conditions, with implications in cardiovascular health (risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or kidney disease), as well as overall wellness. The goal of this presentation is to review the various guidelines of Hypertension management, focusing on the updated American Academy of Family Physicians 2022 guideline, while referencing others commonly referenced. The Osteopathic concept of Mind, Body, and Spirit will be reviewed and applied to empower the audience to make evidence-based, joint-decision making with an individual, Patient-Oriented approach to Hypertension management. Social Determinants of Healthcare (SDOH) will be discussed briefly, in effort to redirect away from race-based algorithms for Hypertension management.

Rheumatology is a complicated field of medicine with over 100 disorders of the musculoskeletal system, many of which have an autoimmune, inflammatory, or systemic basis. It can be a daunting field for the non-Rheumatologist. This is due to our diseases involving nearly all fields of medicine, the limitations of imaging or laboratory studies alone in making definitive diagnoses, and the dynamic nature of newer therapeutics. The goal of this presentation is to help provide clarity and to update some of these various topics.

Literature and research updates are necessary for all practicing physicians in order to stay current among the vast amount of literature with which we are inundated daily. PubMed statistics state more than one million papers are cited each year into their database. How does a primary care physician pick and choose what evidence might be useful in their patient population? This lecture will be reminiscent of “reports from the field” from decades past, polling practicing family physicians for opinions using the question, “I changed my practice this year when I became aware of evidence that….”

Knee osteoarthritis is very prevalent in the US population. Approximately 20% of the population over the age of 45 has OA. Treatment for is knee OA is not perfect and many people not do not qualify for treatment secondary to medical, health or age reasons. PRP may be beneficial in certain patient populations. We have a better understanding of the mechanism involved with PRP and there are multiple conflicting randomized controlled trials. Physicians should be aware of all possible options for patients.

Short Description:
In 2019, 73 million Americans - about 1 in 5 - were under age 18. This important population has unique nutrition needs that differ from adults, thanks to their growing bodies and increased demands. The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans included nutritional guidance for infants, children, and adolescents for the first time, reinforcing how vital good nutrition is during these stages of rapid growth and development and providing a compass for practitioners to best care for this younger generation. In this webinar, registered dietitian nutritionist and author, Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LDN, CLEC, will shed light on the most recent guidelines, uncover key nutrients for these stages, and arm physicians with practical tips and messages to communicate to patients/caregivers.

Short Description:
In our modern 24/7 fast paced world, sleep is often neglected as a pillar of a healthy lifestyle and is instead esteemed as an indulgence or optional activity. It is the last thing we get to at the end of a busy day and the first thing we sacrifice when a lack of time demands it. One in three adults in America don’t get enough sleep and are often desensitized to its significance accepting it as a “norm.” Some have even worn it as a “badge of honor” in the medical community. This topic is important because we can no longer ignore the utmost importance of sleep and the ill effects of sleep deprivation that are linked to an increased risk of accidents, errors, injuries, poor work performance and productivity, strained relationships, adverse medical conditions, and early death.

Musculoskeletal complaints are present in 48% of the population and are the second-most reported reason patients PCPs. OMT has been shown to effectively treat many conditions such as low back pain with a reduced cost and need for concomitant medication use or medical intervention. OMT use among osteopathic physicians in the US continues to decline. Statistically significant barriers include lack of reimbursement, lack of time, lack of institutional practice/support, and lack of confidence/proficiency. The goal of this presentation is to provide insight for DOs to overcome these barriers to incorporating OMT into their practice.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common rhythm disorder worldwide affecting up to 25 million people. Significant morbidity and mortality are attributed to this disease process. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, ability to manage stroke risk, recognizing approaches to rhythm and rate control, and the relationship between disease processes and atrial fibrillation remain relevant to the primary care physician. Newer understanding of the autonomic nervous system and its impact on atrial fibrillation may provide an opportunity for further research into osteopathic treatment modalities to aid in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

It is an exciting time in the treatment of Type II Diabetes Mellitus. We have never had more treatment options than we have today. But with over 11% of the adult population in the US having diabetes, the need for care of diabetic patients has never been greater. One of the many challenges in helping patients achieve control of their disease is determining which medication(s) are most likely to be effective. This session will describe the available non-insulin medications and provide some tips on medications selection. We will also discuss which medications may provide benefit beyond blood sugar control.
