Short Description:
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic medical conditions, with implications in cardiovascular health (risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or kidney disease), as well as overall wellness. The goal of this presentation is to review the various guidelines of Hypertension management, focusing on the updated American Academy of Family Physicians 2022 guideline, while referencing others commonly referenced. The Osteopathic concept of Mind, Body, and Spirit will be reviewed and applied to empower the audience to make evidence-based, joint-decision making with an individual, Patient-Oriented approach to Hypertension management. Social Determinants of Healthcare (SDOH) will be discussed briefly, in effort to redirect away from race-based algorithms for Hypertension management.

Marijuana was legalized in Virginia in April 2021 for individuals over 21 years of age. With the legalization of marijuana, physicians will see a rise in patients asking about using cannabis as an alternate treatment for medical conditions such as pain, epilepsy, cancer, inflammation and many others. It is important for physicians to understand what marijuana is, the laws within their state, uses and side effects of cannabis so that they can make an informed decision regarding their prescribing of cannabis.
