Short Description:
Research confirms that trauma is pervasive among professionals and patients. Traumatic events can dysregulate the stress response system and be associated with psychiatric and physical disorders. When a patient has a trauma history, but it is not addressed, it may explain why medical conditions remain refractory. Additionally, health care services and clinical medicine can be retraumatizing and may cause some patients not to engage in needed health care. Thus, it is important for physicians to become trauma informed: understand the role trauma plays in their patients’ lives, know how to screen for it, how to respond to it and when to refer, as well as be aware of evidenced based treatments.

Short Description:
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a significant advance in bedside diagnosis and adjunct to the physical exam, yet a recent systematic review shows variable, but generally low use among general practitioners. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommended postgraduate curriculum guidelines for POCUS in family medicine. With the very recent technological improvements in handheld, bedside ultrasound technology, family medicine physicians may have received minimal exposure or training on POCUS. This can lead to poor adoption of this technology in primary care practice. Topics covered will include: appropriate uses of POCUS, probe selection, how to obtain quality images, illustration of the ultrasound views needed to answer specific clinical questions, and hands-on practice in obtaining POCUS images and interpreting image results.

Short Description:
Many physicians are experiencing burn-out, not because of caring for their patients but from administrative burdens and insurance hassles that take so much of their time. They may be considering other options to leave the fee-for-service model. Options such as Direct Primary Care might give them more time spent with each patient. More and more physicians are wanting to explore these models.
