Description

This on-demand package includes the emergency medicine specific sessions that were recorded at IOMA's 2022 Upper Midwest Osteopathic Health Conference. Each session is available individually and the entire conference, including these sessions, are available as a separate package as well.

 

Objectives for Development and Implementation of Treatment Algorithms for Venous Thromboembolism: 

  • Diagnosis of VTE (PE and DVT) in the Emergency Department
  • Morbidity and mortality associated with WTE
  • Healthcare Economic Burden of VTE 
  • Algorithmic approach to therapeutic intervention for VTE

Objectives for It Takes More than Bubble Wrap to Prevent Pediatric Injuries: Lessons from the Emergency Department: 

  • Identify at least three factors that contribute to pediatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries and be able to explain why they are concerns.
  • List at least three design features of off-highway vehicles (ORVs) that contribute to crash and subsequent injury, and be able to discuss how these features make them vulnerable to loss of control on public roadways. 
  • State the most common ways young children are injured on playground slides and by lawn mowers, and how one might avoid those injuries.
  • Discuss important safety messages one might share with patients and their families in anticipatory guidance, and how one could become a more effective safety advocate in preventing injuries and deaths in children.

Objectives for Common Upper and Lower Extremity Injuries and How to Manage in the ED: 

  • Identify common orthopedic injuries that may present to the ED.
  • Understand the appropriate radiographic studies that need ordered and interpreted.
  • Discuss techniques that may aid in reducing certain fractures and dislocations.
  • Understand how to properly splint/immobilize the injured extremity.

Objectives for Systematic Approach to the Poisoned Patient: 

  • Discuss the utility of consulting a medical toxicologist. 
  • Develop an organized approach to the poisoned patient. 
  • Learn how to perform a comprehensive exam on a poisoned patient and recognize this exam is paramount to an accurate evaluation. 
  • Recognize the pertinent high-yield laboratory results in the poisoned patient.

**This speaker will be presenting non-labeled use of therapy in the context of this lecture**

 

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Dr. Brandon Trigger completed his medical school training and emergency medicine residency at the University of Iowa, where he served as chief resident. He has worked in the Twin Cities for the independent physician owned group Emergency Physicians Professional Association (EPPA) since 2008. He has served as the Assistant Medical Director, Medical Director, and Chair for the Emergency Department at MHealth Fairview Southdale Hospital. He also serves as EPPA's physician recruiting chair. As the Medical Director, he has participated in numerous process improvement, research, and quality initiatives and has served on multiple hospital committees. He will begin his Chief of Staff elect term in April 2021.


Charles Jennissen, MD's Profile

Charles Jennissen, MD, is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and a clinical professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Most of Dr. Jennissen’s research projects have addressed injury-related issues, especially those involving off-road vehicles.  Dr. Jennissen is very active in the Iowa ATV Safety Taskforce and is a member of a national coalition led by the Consumer Federation of America that has been working to inform the public and governing officials of the dangers of off-road vehicles on public roads. The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is a member of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids and Dr. Jennissen serves as its Primary Investigator. He  grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota and has been an advisory board member of I-CASH (Iowa Center for Agricultural Safety and Health) for 24 years. He is proud to have received the SAFE KIDS Iowa “People Who Make a Difference” Award in 2006.


Jeffery Wahl, DO's Profile

Jeff Wahl grew up in west central Iowa and graduated from Simpson College with a BA in Biology in 2001. He received his D.O. degree from Des Moines University in 2005 and wen to South Pointe Hospital in Cleveland, OH to complete a traditional rotating internship and orthopedic surgery residency in 2010. Dr. Wahl moved back to Iowa with his wife Becky and three kids following his residency. He currently practices solo, hospital-employed orthopedic surgeon at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center and Green County Medical Center in Jefferson since 2010.


Daniel McCabe, MD's Profile

Dan McCabe is the Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology and a Clinical Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He graduated medical school from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, residency in Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and fellowship in Medical Toxicology at Regions Hospital and the Minnesota Poison Control System in the Twin Cities. He splits his clinical time between the emergency department, the University of Iowa Medical Toxicology consult service, and as a consultant for the Iowa Poison Control Center and Nebraska Regional Poison Center.
