Orthopedic Emergencies 
Todd Peterson, DO

Foot & Ankle Emergencies

Altitude Medicine

Rabies Update in the ER

● Understand current rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) administration protocols.

Dr Todd Peterson DO FAAOS is double board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Capital Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Clive, Iowa. He graduated from Bethel University in Minnesota for his bechelors degree, Des Moines University for medical school, Michigan State University for residency, and Southern Illinois University for fellowship. He sees patients in Clive and Knoxville Iowa. He does surgery at Mercy, UnityPoint, and Broadlawns hospitals. He is also a founding member of Advanced Surgery Center, an all physician-owned center providing outpatient hip and knee replacements and other orthopedic surgeries at a low cost to patients. He grew up in Des Moines and currently lives in Clive with his wife Melanie and three children.

Dr. Ashley Dikis joined the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University in 2020 as an assistant professor. She specializes in all aspects of care related to the forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle, including reconstruction, trauma, diabetic limb salvage, and elective procedures. She has served as the Clinical Department Chair since 2021. Previously, she was a staff podiatrist in the Department of Orthopedics at Greeneville Community Hospital in Greeneville, TN.

Dr. Dikis is certified by both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and history from Purdue University and a doctor of podiatric medicine degree from Des Moines University. She completed her podiatric medicine and surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

David Connett, DO, FACOFP dist. is the Vice Dean and Professor of Family Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences - College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific.  Dr. Connett serves on the Board of Governors for the national organization of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the past President of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians-California, the Osteopathic Medical Board of California and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California.  
Dr. Connett is the former Vice President - Chief Medical Officer of Garden City Hospital in Michigan which is a 250 bed medical center with 13 post graduate training programs.Prior to this he was the Medical Director of the outpatient healthcare facilities for Columbia HCA in Denver Colorado having management oversight of 27 clinics with 72 physicians providing the leadership for reform for both financial and quality oversight.  Dr. Connett served as the Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver Colorado.During his 11 years in Colorado Dr. Connett was also a consultant to the medical board as an expert on the practice of family medicine.  He was also a consultant for the Department of Justice for management of chronic pain patients.  Dr. Connett also serves as a national consultant for residency development to over 85 hospitals for which he has provided financial consultation and development strategies for graduate medical education residency and fellowship training programs.
Dr. Connett is a graduate of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Western University of Healthcare Sciences in 1984 and had his postgraduate training at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and is currently board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine and earned his Distinguished Fellowship by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Over the past 34 years of clinical practice Dr. Connett has practiced family medicine, currently in Rancho Cucamonga, emergency medicine and aerospace medicine serving as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. Dr. Connett is also a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and served in the United States Air Force for five years as a family physician and flight surgeon.

Dr. Hennenfent is the Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Programs Manager for the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) where he oversees the planning and response of antibacterial stewardship efforts and assisting all Iowa healthcare personnel improve infection control practices.

Prior to serving in this role, Dr. Hennenfent was the Emergency Management Coordinator for Animal Health at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and before that, the Public Health Veterinarian for the city of Washington, D.C.
