Henry “Jake” Whitener was born and raised in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. He graduated from Hulbert High School in 2007. He then attended Northeastern State University earning a Bachelor of Science in Cellular Biology in 2011. He was then accepted into Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 2015 as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in 2020. He would pursue a 1-year fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the University Of Cincinnati of which he graduated in July of 2021. He served as an assistant team physician to the University of Cincinnati Athletics Department during that time helping care for greater than 500 Division-I athletes across a number of sports. He now serves as the department chairman for Orthopaedic Surgery at Cherokee Nation Health Services in Tahlequah, OK, providing orthopaedic care to the Native American people.
