Description

Following the completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 

  • Define the classifications of heart failure based on underlying pathophysiology, cardiomyopathy type, and functional impairment
  • Identify the most common etiologies of heart failure
  • Classify patient presentations using the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification
  • Recognize characteristic physical examination findings in heart failure, including pulsus alternans, peripheral edema, and pulmonary effusions
  • Interpret common diagnostic (imaging and laboratory) findings in various types of heart failure.
  • Formulate initial management strategies for patients with acute decompensated heart failure
  • Identify factors that precipitate acute heart failure exacerbations
  • Apply guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) for chronic compensated HFrEF and describe management of other chronic heart failure subtypes
  • Recognize indications for device-based therapies, including biventricular pacing, in selected patients with heart failure

Dr. Cox received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania and completed his internal medicine residency at New York Hospital Queens in Flushing, New York. Dr. Cox currently works as a Hospitalist at Lewis Gale Montgomery in Blacksburg, Virginia, in addition to his role as the Program Director for the Lewis Gale Internal Medicine Residency Program. He Additionally, he is board certified by both AOBIM and ABIM. The Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association (VOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.
