This presentation will review factors affecting digestive health and provide specific interventions that include herbal, nutrient, dietary, and mental/emotional to reduce the impact of chronic digestive disorders.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand integrative and functional medicine
  • Review the role of microbiome in GI health
  • Discuss dietary and lifestyle factors affecting digestive disorders
  • Incorporate effective integrative and functional medicine interventions to improve chronic digestive disease in patients.

The Texas Medical Board's Top 10 List

This presentation will discuss new rules put into place by the Texas Medical Board in the past six (6) months as well as discuss various actions/activities and concerns that place physicians at risk of investigation and disciplinary action by the Texas Medical Board.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the changes to regulations that may affect their practice and their professional license
  2. Discuss risk management tools to lower the risk of complaint, investigation, and disciplinary action
  3. Discuss ethical concerns with the practice of medicine in the state of Texas.

Statement of Accreditation
The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates this program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Tonya Sweezer is a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Naturopathic physician. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Seattle University and her Naturopathic Medical degree from Bastyr University. She then went on to complete her medical education at the University of North Texas Health Science Center earning her Masters in Health Sciences and her medical degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Sweezer completed her Family Medicine residency training at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas, TX.  Dr. Sweezer expertly combines naturopathic, osteopathic, and functional medicine principles with traditional medical practice to optimize health and maintain wellness.

Jeff McDonald is a founding partner of the law firm of McDonald, Mackay & Weitz, L.L.P., Austin, Texas.  Licensed in Texas since 1988, Jeff has worked as an attorney in both the public and private sectors. He previously served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, and as the Director of Hearings and Compliance for the Texas Medical Board, the Texas Physician Assistant Board, and the Texas Acupuncture Board. He is Board certified in Administrative Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and his current practice focuses primarily on physician licensure defense, health license defense, general administrative law, and professional licensing for health care providers, as well as other services.

Mr. McDonald also serves as the Field Representative for Texas Osteopathic Medical Association’s Impaired Physician Committee. He frequently works with health care professionals who are experiencing chemical dependency or mental health issues.

Attorney Jon Porter is a partner with the law firm of McDonald, Mackay, Porter & Weitz, LLP in Austin, Texas. With an extensive background handling legal, regulatory, and licensure issues, Jon Porter has built a reputation for being an experienced and highly skilled?professional license defense attorneys. Before attending law school, Mr. Porter was a licensed investigator for the?Texas Medical Board?for several years. Since becoming an attorney in 1999, Mr. Porter has worked extensively in both the public and private sectors. He was previously an appellate attorney for a large Houston-based law firm, writing briefs for various courts including the US Supreme Court and the Texas Supreme Court. In the public sector, Mr. Porter was a legislative aide for Texas Representative Senfronia Thompson. Mr. Porter returned to the Texas Medical Board as a prosecuting attorney and later became the Director of Enforcement and Compliance. Mr. Porter joined?McDonald, Mackay, Porter & Weitz, LLP?as a partner in 2003.
