Dementia is a well-known entity, but mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is not well understood. MCI is the stage between the expected decline in memory and thinking that happens with age and the more serious decline of dementia. MCI may include problems with memory, language or judgment. People with MCI may be aware that their memory or mental function has "slipped." It is a new area of focus in research for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s and primary care physicians need to be comfortable discussing it with their patients.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize mild cognitive impairment, how to diagnose it and how to distinguish it from normal aging.
- Restate the best guide for treatment.
