Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in the Primary Care Setting
This session will start by getting listeners up to date with the current understanding of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease both as a discrete disease process as well as a defining component of metabolic syndrome. From this foundation we will discuss several possible strategies for how to screen for it in your office, how to treat it as a primary care physician, and the role specialists play. Treatment will focus on current evidence regarding dietary and exercise interventions that seem to be particularly effective for NAFLD; screening will cover lab interpretation, the use of point-of-care ultrasound, CT, and MRI images.

Dr. Dante Paredes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Department of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He works in the HSC Health Central Family Medicine Clinic with a clinical focus on reversing diabetes, obesity, and generalized anxiety disorder. In addition, he teaches clinical nutrition for the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Family Medicine Core Clerkship. He is core faculty for the Medical City of Fort Worth Family Medicine and Osteopathic Neuromuscular Medicine residencies.

Dr. Jack Lewis specializes in general urology, including kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, robotic cases, and penile prostheses. He spent many years in the U.S. Air Force, both as a flight surgeon and urologist. He likes to develop long-term relationships with patients.
Dr. Lewis earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine and completed a urology residency from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Lewis lives in Mansfield with his wife. They have three sons, one in high school and two in college. In addition to working at USMD, he is assigned to the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel, Flight Surgeon at the 301 MDS, DFW.
