The leading causes of blindness and low vision in the United States are primarily age-related eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Clinicians should be familiar with the signs and symptoms associated with each condition and be able to perform a basic eye examination to assess the patient.

John S. Swogger, DO, “Ophthalmology in Primary Care,” is a board certified ophthalmologist at UPMC in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University in State College and a 2012 graduate of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed an internship at Allegheny General Hospital, an ophthalmology residency at UPMC and a glaucoma fellowship at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. Dr. Swogger is a member of POMA, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society and the American Glaucoma Society.
