Title:  Pediatric Asthma:  What the Primary Care Physician Should Know

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1)  Identify the classifications of asthma and their components.

2)  Identify the diagnostic criteria for asthma.

3)  Recognize the signs and symptoms of poorly controlled asthma.

4)  Recognize the characteristics of a child with asthma who is at risk of hospitalization.

5)  Provide appropriate treatment for a patient who has an acute exacerbation of asthma, including asthma that is not responsive to adrenergic agonist therapy.

Dr. Jones is a clinical associate professor in primary care at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MUCOM) in Indianapolis, IN. He is a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee for the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, the Catholic Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Indiana and Oklahoma Osteopathic Associations. Dr. Jones received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma and his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSUCOM) in Tulsa, OK. Dr. Jones is board certified in pediatrics. He has been teaching and mentoring medical students and resident physicians for ten years. Dr. Jones has given more than two hundred lectures in graduate medical education classrooms as well as local, regional, and national conferences. His foremost interest is in his faith, where he attends Mass at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Dr. Jones also enjoys listening to his wife, Kayla, play classical piano. He currently has three living daughters: Gemma Rose Raphaela, age thirteen years; Mary Agnes, age eleven years; and Lucy Cecilia, age seven years.
