Description

Sleep problems are one of the most common complaints individuals bring to their health care providers and pinning down the etiology can be challenging. Complicating the clinician's task is the individuals' use of various substances, licit and illicit, that contribute to poor sleep. This presentation will focus on the use of alcohol and tobacco as two common, widely used, substances. Because an individual may not disclose its use, alcohol can be a hidden factor complicating sleep. In addition, this presentation will briefly begin with the basics of sleep physiology and end with an overview of treatment strategies with an emphasis on nonpharmacologic interventions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review basic sleep physiology
  • Understand how tobacco and alcohol affect sleep
  • Review treatment interventions with a focus on nonpharmacologic
