In this session, we will discuss sports-related concussions, exploring the latest developments in diagnosis, including the most recently revised update on side-line assessment tools.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define sports-related concussion/mTBI
  • Describe why SRC is a diffuse brain disorder.
  • Assess the four common symptom/sign categories of SRC.
  • Describe the roles of the licensed healthcare provider in the pre-participation, side-line evaluation, and post injury of the injured athlete.
  • Recognize the “red flags” of SRC leading to emergency evaluation and treatment. 
  • Gain confidence in transitioning the athlete back to the classroom and back into competition: “Return to Learn” and “Return to Play”.
  • Counsel the older athlete about retirement from contact sports.

Richard Riemer, DO Related Seminars and Products

Richard B. Riemer, DO, is a specialist in neurology at Touro University Medical Group. Dr. Riemer treats all neurologic conditions with an emphasis on neuromusculoskeletal and spine disorders. Dr. Riemer earned his Doctor of Medicine from the AT Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He then completed his internship at Tucson General Hospital in Arizona and his residency at the University of California Davis in Sacramento.

Dr. Riemer is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. At Touro University Medical Group, Dr. Riemer performs a wide variety of neuromusculoskeletal and spine procedures. He takes a special interest in performing EMGs and other nerve conduction studies. Dr. Riemer has been endowed with numerous awards throughout his career, including Outstanding Educator of the Year (UC Davis Neurology), Physician of the Year (Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeon), and Volunteer Faculty (UC Davis).
