Description

During this session, the lecturer will discuss the risks and benefits of using the barbell deadlift, the hardstyle kettlebell swing, and the kettlebell Turkish Get-Ups for the prevention and treatment of Metabolic Syndrome, Back Pain, Osteoporosis, and Sarcopenia. The session will include both a summary of the evidence as well as practical instruction and an introduction to these movements so that the participants can increase their comfort and familiarity allowing for application in the clinical environment.

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to

  1. Familiarize participants with the current evidence regarding the risks and benefits of resistance training for musculoskeletal and metabolic health in the general population
  2. Discuss the practical utility of using the barbell deadlift, the one-arm kettlebell swing, and the kettlebell turkish get-up as specific exercises to teach and prescribe
  3. Develop competency in designing a simple exercise program using the American College of Sports Medicine's FITT-VP format

Statement of Accreditation
The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Dante Paredes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Department of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He works in the HSC Health Central Family Medicine Clinic with a clinical focus on reversing diabetes, obesity, and generalized anxiety disorder. In addition, he teaches clinical nutrition for the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Family Medicine Core Clerkship. He is core faculty for the Medical City of Fort Worth Family Medicine and Osteopathic Neuromuscular Medicine residencies.
