Description

The thyroid has important roles to regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body. Different types of thyroid disorders affect either its structure or function. Thyroid disorders can be well managed with treatment, therefore necessitating physician education on the various diagnostic and treatment options available.

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the thyroid gland
  • Discuss thyroid function testing and imaging
  • Identify hypo and hyperthyroid diagnosis and treatment
  • Recognize and treat thyroid disease more confidently

Jennifer M. Giordano, DO, "The Butterfly Effect - Thyroid Disorders," is a clinical assistant professor in the division of endocrinology at West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown, and director of telemedicine, extended outcomes for community outreach (ECHO) at WVU. Board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, Dr. Giordano is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a 2009 graduate of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an internship and internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio and an endocrinology fellowship at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Dr. Giordano is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Endocrine Society, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the American Diabetes Association and the American Thyroid Association. She has no relevant financial relationship(s) with ineligible companies to disclose.
