Please note this program was a part of the OPSO 2024 Annual Conference. 

This presentation explores the current and future role that artificial intelligence plays in the practice of medicine. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
•Describe the typical process of technology adoption and integration into daily life, from initial development to widespread use.
•Predict the near-term advancements in AI technology based on current capabilities and research trajectories, understanding the concepts of ‘AI agents’ and ‘virtual practitioners’.
•Evaluate the potential impact of future AI systems, discussing ethical, regulatory, and practical considerations for the integration of advanced AI to clinical practice, including benefits and challenges.

Accreditation Statement: The Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

David O. Shumway D.O. is one of the leading voices on clinical applications and workflow integration of large language model artificial intelligence in the osteopathic medical community. He has written thought-provoking pieces in The DO and peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as given accredited CME presentations on the topic at medical conferences across the country. Most notably, he was chosen to brief the AOA President, Board of Trustees, and affiliated osteopathic leaders as the keynote speaker at the AOA Midyear Meeting in 2024 for the first profession-wide strategic discussion on clinical artificial intelligence. More recently, he has become involved in helping to develop the AOIA’s Digital Health Innovation Community of Practice (DHI-CoP), the osteopathic profession’s long-term response to emerging health technologies, and as a panelist in the AOF’s Osteopathic Future Initiative advocating for digital health training in osteopathic medical education. Dr. Shumway is also heavily involved in the AOA, leadership and health policy, as a graduate of the AOA Leadership Academy and a TIPS Fellow. Dr. Shumway is an active-duty Air Force physician and is board eligible in Internal Medicine. He is currently en route to RAF Lakenheath in the UK with his wife, two children, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
