The Missing Link: OMT for Women and Children

In this dynamic, interactive, case-based session, attendees will navigate through common outpatient clinical encounters of the female and pediatric patient. Attendees will be reminded of their osteopathic knowledge base and encouraged to reinvigorate their skills in manipulative medicine, building on a solid foundation of evidence-based literature supporting the use of OMT in a variety of patient presentations. Integrative Approaches to Reducing Infections

Conventional approaches to preventing and treating infections have tremendously reduced the burden of disease over the last century, but vaccines and pharmaceutical antimicrobials are not yet available for a wide range of pathogens. Luckily, many other approaches, including healthy lifestyle choices, medicinal foods, supplements, and botanicals appear to be safe and potentially effective – in this session, we will explore these integrative approaches, including practical considerations in the midst of the current pandemic.

The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates this program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Meaghan C. Nelsen, DO, MS, FACOOG is the only physician in the country maintaining board certifications in both Obstetrics & Gynecology as well as Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Nelsen received her DO and Master’s degrees from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Ob/Gyn residency at Inspira Medical Center in New Jersey. Following years of practice in Philadelphia, she returned to New York for her Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine residency at Southampton Hospital.
Dr. Nelsen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at UNT Health Science Center/TCOM. She is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians & Gynecologists and a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, American Association of Osteopathy, Osteopathic Cranial Academy, and Texas Osteopathic Medical Association.

Rob Slater is a family and integrative medicine physician who earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin, his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and his Master’s in Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Dr. Slater completed residency training in family medicine at Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Integrative and Behavioral Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, then became an assistant professor at UTMB. In 2019, Dr. Slater joined the newly-founded medical school at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio to help develop their medical curriculum and currently serves as a director of the Developing Osteopathic Clinical Skills (DOCS) program. He has enthusiastically incorporated integrative health and medicine into the formal curriculum at UIW-SOM, which is now integrated into over 70 different large and small group sessions in the first two years of medical school! Dr. Slater is also the director of the Integrative Gastroenterology course of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) Fellowship.
