There are more than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy, each with its own set of symptoms and prognosis, and has many causes. This lecture will identify clues to diagnosis, the typical signs that implicate peripheral neuropathy from other causes, the types of tests needed to determine the location and extent of nerve damage, and the treatments available.

Louis W. Catalano, Jr., MD, FAAN, FRSM, “Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy,” is a practicing physician and director of Excela Health Neurology in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Board certified in neurology, electroencephalography and pain medicine, he is also an associate clinical professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Catalano is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a 1967 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed an internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and a neurology fellowship at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. Past president of the Pennsylvania Neurological Society, Dr. Catalano is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also a member of the American Society of Neuroimaging, the American Clinical Academy of Neurophysiology, the National Headache Foundation, the Electroencephalography and Clinical Neuroscience Society, the European Federation of Neurological Societies and the World Federation of Neurology.
