Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this lecture, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the scope of wilderness medicine.
  • Review the contents of a complete wilderness/back country emergency kit.
  • Discuss the importance of a clean water supply while in the back country.
  • Discuss the most common methods of obtaining a clean water supply in the back country.
  • Evaluate injury/illness situations commonly encountered in the back country.

Dr. Thompson is a Family Practice Physician from NorthLakes Community Clinic who sees patients at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Association in Family Medicine. Dr. Thompson earns his Medical Degree from University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD and completed his residency at the University of Pikeville KY, School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Thompson's hobbies include cross-country skiing, fishing, gardening (especially heirloom tomato varieties), and sailing.
