Short Description:
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic medical conditions, with implications in cardiovascular health (risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or kidney disease), as well as overall wellness. The goal of this presentation is to review the various guidelines of Hypertension management, focusing on the updated American Academy of Family Physicians 2022 guideline, while referencing others commonly referenced. The Osteopathic concept of Mind, Body, and Spirit will be reviewed and applied to empower the audience to make evidence-based, joint-decision making with an individual, Patient-Oriented approach to Hypertension management. Social Determinants of Healthcare (SDOH) will be discussed briefly, in effort to redirect away from race-based algorithms for Hypertension management.

Short Description:
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a significant advance in bedside diagnosis and adjunct to the physical exam, yet a recent systematic review shows variable, but generally low use among general practitioners. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommended postgraduate curriculum guidelines for POCUS in family medicine. With the very recent technological improvements in handheld, bedside ultrasound technology, family medicine physicians may have received minimal exposure or training on POCUS. This can lead to poor adoption of this technology in primary care practice. Topics covered will include: appropriate uses of POCUS, probe selection, how to obtain quality images, illustration of the ultrasound views needed to answer specific clinical questions, and hands-on practice in obtaining POCUS images and interpreting image results.
