Heidi Olsen, MSN, RN, CPN, SANE-P

Heidi Olson is a Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), and the SANE Program Manager at Children's Mercy Kansas City. She has a wide range of experience in pediatric and forensic nursing. She has also taught as an adjunct clinical instructor for the University of Missouri - Kansas City and the University of St. Mary's, Overland Park, Kansas. Heidi received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico. She then completed her Master of Nursing with an emphasis in Public Health from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona.

Heidi is currently the Manager of the Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Her role includes performing forensic exams on children who have been victims of sexual assault, running the day-to-day logistics of the SANE program, and following up with victims and their families after discharge. In addition, she communicates with law enforcement, child protective services, and a large multidisciplinary team. She also educates the healthcare staff on relevant topics regarding sexual violence. Heidi also serves as an expert witness for the prosecution during trials for victims of sexual assault. Heidi has performed and/or reviewed over 1,500 pediatric sexual assault cases in the past three years. She also has presented over 200 times internationally about recognizing human trafficking, child-on-child sexual assault, pornography, and exploitation.

Since 2019, Heidi's team has identified numerous trafficking victims using an evidence-based screening tool in the Emergency Department. Heidi started and leads the human trafficking workgroup at Children's Mercy, Kansas City, Missouri. Heidi has presented with the Anti Internet Child Exploitation Team (a Canadian non-profit) and organized Empower KC, a community event to raise awareness about sexual exploitation in Kansas City. Heidi also serves as a member of the Kansas Human Trafficking Task Board for the Attorney General's Office and is a member of the Missouri Human Trafficking Task Force.
