Julia Van Liew, PhD
Dr. Van Liew is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Medicine, Bioethics, and Medical Humanities at Des Moines University and a Staff Psychologist in outpatient geriatrics at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines. In her academic position, Dr. Van Liew’s teaching and research interests include development of medical students’ skills in providing culturally and socially responsive health care that compassionately and effectively serves patients with diverse medical, psychiatric, and sociocultural needs. In her clinical practice, she specializes in working with individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and medical concerns, particularly older adults. Dr. Van Liew received her PhD in clinical psychology, with a specialty emphasis on health psychology, from the University of Iowa. She completed her predoctoral psychology internship at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.
