Stephen Derdak, DO, FCCP


Stephen Derdak, DO, FCCP (Col, USAF, ret) is currently Clinical Professor (Medicine) in the Divisions of Cardiology and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, and is the former director of the Adult ECMO Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX. Dr Derdak received his B.A. (Biology) at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his D.O. degree (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of North Texas Health Science Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine through the support of the USAF Military Health Professions Scholarship Program. Dr Derdak completed Internal Medicine Residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio, TX and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY. During his active duty USAF career, Dr. Derdak was involved in developing the USAF Critical Care Aeromedical Transport Team (CCATT) concept, the military's first Adult Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO) program, and was recognized with the USAF Physician of the Year award by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine. In addition, he is a former member of the American Board of Internal Medicine - Critical Care Medicine Maintenance of Certification Examination Writing Committee. Outside of medicine, Dr Derdak is an FAA-commercial pilot and certified flight instructor.
