- Short Description:
- Research confirms that trauma is pervasive among professionals and patients. Traumatic events can dysregulate the stress response system and be associated with psychiatric and physical disorders. When a patient has a trauma history, but it is not addressed, it may explain why medical conditions remain refractory. Additionally, health care services and clinical medicine can be retraumatizing and may cause some patients not to engage in needed health care. Thus, it is important for physicians to become trauma informed: understand the role trauma plays in their patients’ lives, know how to screen for it, how to respond to it and when to refer, as well as be aware of evidenced based treatments.

- Rheumatology is a complicated field of medicine with over 100 disorders of the musculoskeletal system, many of which have an autoimmune, inflammatory, or systemic basis. It can be a daunting field for the non-Rheumatologist. This is due to our diseases involving nearly all fields of medicine, the limitations of imaging or laboratory studies alone in making definitive diagnoses, and the dynamic nature of newer therapeutics. The goal of this presentation is to help provide clarity and to update some of these various topics.

- Telemedicine has expanded as technology has allowed it, and with the COVID pandemic, expanded even more. With the introduction of technology and the ability to “see” patients virtually, there is a need for physicians to understand the risks associated with telemedicine and identify how the government is scrutinizing it to avoid potential pitfalls and the potential for litigation.

- In today’s clinical environment many patients seek evaluation in the primary care office for shoulder pain. The shoulder is, however, a complex joint and as such represents a challenge to those who are less comfortable with shoulder anatomy or the complexity of the special test used in the diagnosis of shoulder injury. With the time constraints we face daily due to ever shrinking appointment times the skills needed for a good musculoskeletal (MSK) exam such as the shoulder become lost with a quick, and sometimes unnecessary, referral to orthopedics. With a little refresher, however, we can more confidently make the diagnosis and provide better quality care for our patients.

- In the Primary Care outpatient setting, physicians will encounter patients with symptoms that may be related to sleep disorders. A significant portion of the population suffers from both insomnia and hypersomnia. Physicians may not have the tools or knowledge to properly evaluate these patients and perform a proper diagnostic workup. Physicians may not feel comfortable with prescribing a controlled substance as treatment related to sleep to patients and knowing about non-pharmaceutical treatments would be helpful to manage these patients. This presentation will cover many of these concerns and should improve care of patients.

- Musculoskeletal complaints are present in 48% of the population and are the second-most reported reason patients PCPs. OMT has been shown to effectively treat many conditions such as low back pain with a reduced cost and need for concomitant medication use or medical intervention. OMT use among osteopathic physicians in the US continues to decline. Statistically significant barriers include lack of reimbursement, lack of time, lack of institutional practice/support, and lack of confidence/proficiency. The goal of this presentation is to provide insight for DOs to overcome these barriers to incorporating OMT into their practice.

- Acute ankle sprains are the most common lower limb injury in athletes and account for 16%-40% of all sports-related injuries. It is especially common in basketball, American football, and soccer. The majority of sprains affect the lateral ligaments, particularly the anterior talofibular ligament. Despite its high prevalence, a high proportion of patients experience persistent residual symptoms and injury recurrence. A detailed history and proper physical examination are diagnostic cornerstones.

- Vaccination has been one of the most significant public health achievements in human history, drastically reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases and saving countless lives. However, recent trends indicate a decline in vaccination acceptance and completion rates in the US and Europe. This decline is a pressing issue that requires a coordinated effort from healthcare providers. Pediatricians, other primary care providers, and specialists must employ consistent, evidence-based strategies to engage families and the broader society in fostering vaccine acceptance and protecting public health by adhering to the current vaccine schedule. By participating in this session, healthcare providers will be equipped with strategies to implement current vaccination schedules, address disparities, and effectively communicate with patients and caregivers to enhance vaccine uptake and public health outcomes.

- Pain management is one the most common reasons for office visits. Osteopathic physicians are uniquely trained to assist patients in the non-pharmacologic management of common painful injuries and mechanical dysfunctions. This goal of this workshop is to educate attendees about the modality of pain management called Dry Needling which is often not taught in osteopathic medical school or residency.

- Atrial fibrillation is the most common rhythm disorder worldwide affecting up to 25 million people. Significant morbidity and mortality are attributed to this disease process. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, ability to manage stroke risk, recognizing approaches to rhythm and rate control, and the relationship between disease processes and atrial fibrillation remain relevant to the primary care physician. Newer understanding of the autonomic nervous system and its impact on atrial fibrillation may provide an opportunity for further research into osteopathic treatment modalities to aid in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
