With the ongoing shortage of psychiatrists and other mental health providers across the country, the onus of mental health treatment is falling largely onto primary care physicians and non-psychiatric specialists. The purpose of this presentation is to increase the knowledge and confidence of non-psychiatric providers in the diagnosing and management of major depressive disorder (MDD) using a variety of evidence-based treatments. This presentation will start with a brief review of MDD diagnostic criteria and pathophysiology, will then move on to a review of the clinical details of classic pharmacological MDD treatments (i.e. antidepressants, augmenting agents), and will conclude with a discussion of the clinical details of newer interventional treatment modalities (i.e. psychedelics, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and electroconvulsive therapy).

The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates is program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Nathan S. Johnston is a private practice psychiatrist in the Northwest area of San Antonio. He completed his psychiatry residency training at the UT Health — San Antonio (UTH-SA) where he served as the chief resident. Dr. Johnston has been the recipient of multiple national and local awards, has published and presented multiple research projects of his own design, and remains an adjunct faculty member at the UTH-SA campus where he gives weekly lectures to the psychiatry residents and medical students.
Dr. Johnston founded Phoenix Mental Health to bring new, innovative, evidence-based treatments for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) to the people of San Antonio… and beyond. Phoenix Mental Health will be the first clinical site in San Antonio to offer Deep Brain Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), while also offering IV Ketamine and Intranasal Ketamine (Spravato) all for the treatment of MDD.
In addition to the above, Dr. Johnston can diagnose and treat a multitude of mental health issues including, but not limited to, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, thought disorders/psychosis, ADHD, and autism.
