Description

This is a lecture-based informative session describing different degenerative changes in the lumbar spine, which commonly present to Family Medicine physicians as subacute or chronic lower back pain. We will review conditions, pathophysiological and treatment of these conditions.

Objectives:

  • Define terms used to describe disc disease and changes to the spine
  • Compare/contrast spondylosis, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
  • Identify clinical findings that require immediate evaluation and radiological imaging
  • Interpret radiological imaging 

 

Statement of Accreditation

The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Townes “Tucker” Leigh, Jr serves as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also currently serves as the founding Program Director for the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium/Huntsville Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency and Head Medical Team Physician for Sam Houston Athletics. He earned his DO degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010, completed a three-year residency at the University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency in Tuscaloosa in 2013 and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Birmingham in 2014. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, Family Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, and holds a certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine.
